Trains from Luxor

To travel by train is the cheapest possibility to go from Luxor to Cairo or Aswan. And the railways are safe, even you will find other news with the content, that for foreigners it is only allowed to travel to Cairo by plane.

Luxor – Cairo / Cairo – Luxor

This train has many stopps, its design will remind you to the plastic culture of the 50th, mostly the
adjustment of the air condition is very cold.

Departure Cairo 10 p.m. and 12.30 a.m.

This trains have only a few stopps, the fabric covered seats are comfortable (first class three, second class four seats each row). Acceptable adjustment of the air condition. This trains offer also the special car "Nefertiti" (cabins with six reclining seats) for LE 60

Luxor – Aswan / Aswan – Luxor

On all this trains non-alcoholic drinks and snacks will be served. No smoking in the cars. We
recommend to take a light blanket in your hand luggage (sometimes the air condition is adjusted very cold).

Additional trains

Every night there are running sleeper trains from Aswan, Luxor to Cairo and vice versa. On the way from Cairo to Aswan it is possible to make a 72 hours break in Luxor without extra costs. But it is necessary to make good time planning because you have to buy two tickets with exactly time to continue your trip as from Luxor. Including dinner and breakfast (both reminders to the meals on charter flights) the prices per cabin are (the same if to/from Luxor or Aswan):
for a single  cabin 70 US Dollar or 60 €,
for a double cabin 100 US Dollar or 85 €.

Since December 2003 the tickets will be sold in foreign currencies only!

So-called regular trains also offer 1st and 2nd class cars with only little comfort. The best for this trains is to buy the ticket in the train (supplementary fare LE 2), because often the ticket office at the railway station refuses to sell this tickets to tourist.
To Cairo LE 15,

Attention: The information centre inside the Luxor railway station is very helpful. The staff is very
friendly, speaks good English. It's recommended to buy the tickets some days in advance, especially for trips on weekends or during the holiday season. Even so you can her for a trip to Cairo: Sorry, fully booked. In this case ask for a ticket from Aswan to Cairo. Mostly than you will get a seat for some more pounds. The reason: Every town gets a limited number of seats, from Aswan mostly it is easier to find a seat than from Luxor. All prices are for one-way tickets.

 

Busses from Luxor

From Luxor you can travel b< overland busses to Aswan, Hurghada, Cairo, Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab and Suez. Departure by Upper Egypt Travel in Karnak Temple Street behind the exit of the Luxor temple. There you also can buy your ticket. Especially if you like to go to Cairo, Dahab or Sharm el Sheikh it is highly recommended to buy you ticket at least one day in advance. Usually a ride to Hurghada will be without problems, except you urgently need to take the bus that continues from Hurghada to Cairo. Attention: Tickets to Aswan are sold inside the bus only! You reach Cairo in aproximately nine, hurghada within four hours, to Sharm el Sheikh appr. 13 hours. All busses are equipped with air condition (frequently adjusted very cold!) and TV (if most of the guests are Egyptians it propably becomes very noisy). In addition busses to Cairo are equipped with a toilet. Soft drinks are available but are very expensive.

The bus at 5 p.m. continues to Dahab (LE 50) and finally to Sharm el Sheikh (LE 100).

To Kairo there starts a daily bus at 7 p.m., the price is LE 60. Final station for all other connections is Suez (LE 43 up to LE 45).

The bus to Aswan costs LE 10. Busses depart at 7.15, 9.30, 11.30 a.m., 2, 3 and 8 p.m..
